One day a parent came into our studio and said her son wanted to be in a school talent show, The only problem was that he had autism. Had difficulty with speech, eye contact, and standing still. We helped developed routines that would compliment his strengths and avoid frustration. Kids in his classroom were amazed over the magic he performed. After his performance, his mother was in tears over the joy she experienced in watching her son do something she never thought possible.
When we first met this student, he had difficulty with speaking and fine motor skills making him quiet and reclusive. While working with him for several months he began to be more talkative and more engaging to the people around him. Magic gave him a sense of pride and confidence, because he was able to do something people thought was amazing. He performs regularly for his family and friends, and he has a tremendous memory for the things he has learned. He loved magic so much we continue to work with him, and he has performed in several of our shows.
When we were first introduced to this student, it was a sad story. He had bone cancer in his leg that could have cost him his limb, worse yet his life. During treatments, we began working with him by teaching him magic, giving him a distraction from what was going on. The more we worked on his magic, the more he began to focus on his greater potential, and less on the trauma of his day-to-day struggles. As he started to develop more confidence, he would perform for the other kids in the hospital as well as the medical staff. Magic was there at a time when he needed it most. Magic was a bright revitalization to a dark chapter in his life. Thankfully this story has a happy ending, he did not lose his leg, his cancer is now in remission, and he has graduated from high school.
